A tube bundle is the internal tube assembly of a heat exchanger—the coil-and-tube core that actually transfers heat, mounted inside a shell or connected to headers. When that core wears out or fails, replacing just the tube bundle is usually far cheaper and faster than replacing the whole heat exchanger or water heater.

Replacing a bundle is a four-step job, and the first step is the one that decides whether the rest goes smoothly.
The reason the sequence matters: a bundle that is dimensionally close but not exact turns into field rework on a unit that is already down. Measuring first is cheaper than modifying later.

The default construction is copper tubing with aluminum fins, which covers most HVAC and domestic hot water duty and is the most cost-effective combination for the majority of replacements. Where the application is harder on the metal, both sides of that pairing can change.
Tube material follows the water and the pressure. Copper is the default; where water chemistry, velocity or temperature rules it out, alternative tube materials are available. Fin material is usually aluminum, with copper fin specified where higher conductivity or durability justifies the cost. Coatings are the third lever: typically not required, but Mainstream offers coatings for enhanced corrosion resistance in the toughest environments.
Tube wall thickness is worth specifying deliberately rather than defaulting to whatever the original had. A heavier wall buys erosion allowance where velocity is high or the water carries solids, and it buys margin where the bundle sees pressure cycling. A lighter wall transfers heat marginally better and costs less. If the original bundle failed from the inside rather than the outside, thickness is the specification to revisit.

It runs in four steps. We field-measure the existing bundle or work from a photo of the nameplate, cross-reference it to the original manufacturer’s make and model, fabricate a custom replacement matched to those dimensions and performance, and ship it on a standard two to three week lead time, with expedites available.
The common ones are leaking or weeping tubes, scaling and fouling that will not clean off, visible corrosion or pitting on tubes and headers, heat transfer that has fallen off so the unit no longer reaches setpoint, and unusual noise or vibration from the shell.
